*** Tactics ***
- www.chesstactics.org
-- Chess Tactics Explained -- Great site that explains how to find tactics.
Not a puzzle site. But start on the first page and follow it to the end and your ability will improve.
- www.chesstempo.com -- thousands of
tactical puzzles that get harder as you improve. They aren't timed but you lose all credit if you miss any of the moves.
- www.tacticstime.com -- author of at least 3 tactics books. Has a very nice
emailed newsletter. His basic premise is at the amateur level we lose or win games because of simple tactics and his object is
to get us to recognize these simpler patterns instead of spending lots of time on complex tactical puzzles. I personally
can't argue with this premise.
- www.chess.com -- thousands of
tactical puzzles that get harder as you improve. They are timed but you lose fewer points if you are able
to get part of the way into the tactic.
*** Coaches ***
These coaches believe improving your visualization skills will improve your
ability to win chess games. Listing here is not a personal endorsement.
- Dan Heisman -- Mr. Heisman has written extensively about visualization in chess.
It was in his writings that I first read about the "Whose Guarding Whom" exercise
and the idea of "backing up" a mate or tactics by a few moves to force the visualization of the puzzle.
